Kim Basinger Demands Craigslist to Ban all Posts with Animals

Kim Basinger, an actress and animal lover, submitted a demand letter to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster, requesting that any posts involving animals be removed from the site.

While Craigslist prohibits the selling of animals, it does enable users to post animals they want to "rehome," which opens the door to trading animals for illicit purposes like dogfighting and other sorts of animal abuse.

“It's frustrating to see thousands of ads each day from cities around the country of unscrupulous breeders, puppy and kitten mill operators, and dishonest merchants exploiting the Craigslist ‘re homing' loophole and duping families into paying outrageous fees for animals,” Basinger said. “In collaboration with the Animal Legal Defense Fund, I ask Craigslist to fulfill its ethical and corporate commitment by permanently barring these posts, thus closing the animal ‘rehoming' loophole.”

According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), Craigslist users have purchased sick animals infected with diseases like Parvo as a result of neglect and unsanitary housing conditions (which are typical of puppy mills) as well as “rehoming” schemes in which horses were sold for slaughter in Canada or Mexico.

In one incident, a serial dog killer maimed and killed 29 puppies obtained on Craigslist, several of which were advertised as "free to a good home."

ALDF Executive Director Stephen Wells said, "We've heard from an alarming number of families who have been scammed by breeders and animal brokers on Craigslist, not to mention the cruelty and suffering caused on the animals themselves."
