Jimmy Carter still lives in a modest $167,000 two-bedroom house he built before his presidency

The 39th President of the United States, in term from 1977-1981, Jimmy Carter, has recently opened up about his humble, post-term life. He spoke to the Washington Post about his choice of returning to his hometown of Plains, Georgia (which has a total population of 700 people, just so you know) over cashing in on his fame as an ex-President and getting rich by means of corporate speaking or being part of boards of big companies, like his predecessor Gerald Ford decided to do.

But he doesn’t condemn those who do decide to make use of their careers as politicians; it just wasn’t his cup of tea.

Jimmy Carter is the only president in the modern era to have returned and continued to live full-time in the house that he lived in before his presidency – a two-bedroom cottage ranch which is said to be valued at $167,000. He insists that being rich was never one of his goals and that he was determined to live a modest lifestyle.

After his peanut business went under and he was forced to sell it, he made his living off of book revenue; he has since authored 33 books on a range of topics. On top of that, he still does receive his annual pension of $210,700, as do all former presidents.

The total expenditure reports for Carter in the current fiscal year indicate that he costs US taxpayers the least amount of money, compared to other former presidents. $456,000 covering security staff, pensions, offices and all other expenses, when compared to north of $1 million for all other former presidents, doesn’t sound bad at all.

Carter survived a health scare back in 2015 where he was diagnosed with melanoma but after chemotherapy, he has been declared to be completely cancer-free. He proudly states that he likes to remain active and do the dishes after every meal and teaches Sunday School at Marantha Baptist Church every fortnight.
