Humans know what happens in the minutes after they die, research says

In 2016, researchers from the University of Southampton in the UK made a rather intriguing discovery after they had studied about 2,000 cardiac arrest patients over a period of four years. Their research which was published in the journal Resuscitation revealed that the brain continues to work for a certain amount of time even after your heart stops beating.
Researchers reached these conclusions after patients whose hearts had stopped beating were resuscitated and described their experiences during that short span of time. Many related that they were fully aware of what had happened and even described conversations between doctors and nurses in the interim period when their hearts had stopped.
This made researchers realize that there was some kind of mental activity still going on after a cardiac arrest, contrary to what was previously believed.
Dr. Sam Parnia the lead of the study who is now based at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine in New York said.
We know the brain can’t function when the heart has stopped beating. But in this case conscious awareness appears to have continued for up to three minutes into the period when the heart wasn’t beating, even though the brain typically shuts down within 20-30 seconds after the heart has stopped.”
This probably explains why some people from the study reported out-of-body experiences or that their perception of time had altered during that period. 140 people who were part of the 2,060 patients that were studied reported some of what had transpired during the time of a cardiac arrest. 39 percent of these people could recollect the time just before their hearts started beating again after they were resuscitated.
In 2017, Dr. Parnia told Live Science that during the first stage of death some people could still perceive what was going on around them as they experienced some level of consciousness. This enabled them to recall the events that took place when their hearts had stopped.
He said, “They’ll describe having awareness of full conversations, of visual things that were going on, that would otherwise not be known to them.”
Another study conducted separately in 2017, also suggests that the brain could still function 10 minutes after a person was pronounced dead although the reason behind this was still a mystery. One plausible reason for this is that when the heart stops beating the brain begins to gradually shut down when the supply of blood ceases. The small window of time that exists between the heart-stopping and the shutting down of the brain probably creates this awareness.

However, in recent years no one who has been officially declared as dead has come back to help scientists unravel the mysteries of what lies beyond.
