Goodbye Surgery – Scientists Just Made Eye Drops that Dissolve Cataracts

A staggering 20 million people worldwide are affected by cataract every year, which is the chief cause behind most of the cases of blindness worldwide. Another astounding figure provided by the Fred Hollows Foundation is that approximately 32.4 million people around the world are blind. Out this huge number, more than fifty percent of the cases are caused by cataracts. The American Academy of Ophthalmology has also stated that nearly 22 million people in the United States over the age of 40 are afflicted by cataracts.
Cataracts are caused when crystalline proteins which are present in the lens begin to cluster together and cause clouding or loss of transparency. These proteins which are created at birth are responsible for keeping the lens clear, but with age, they tend to get disrupted and break down and clump together. Cataract is a natural part of the aging process and is probably barely noticed in some people but can become very severe in others, especially diabetics.
The only treatment for severe cases of cataract is surgery which is sometimes extremely expensive and unaffordable for many people, especially those in developing countries. Many opt out of getting the surgery done as they cannot afford it and end up becoming blind. The recent study published in the scientific journal Nature, by scientists in California involving the use of lanosterol eye drops to treat cataracts, as opposed to performing surgery will definitely give patients who cannot afford the treatment, new hope.
Lanosterol is a naturally occurring steroid that could possibly be a potentially safe, non-invasive solution for treating cataracts in patients with mild forms of cataracts. Scientists realized the significance of lanosterol for clear lenses during their study of two young children who had developed cataracts at an early age. Due to a genetic mutation in their DNA, the production of lanosterol in their bodies was blocked leading to the early development of cataracts. This led the researchers to conclude that lanosterol was responsible for keeping the human lens clear by preventing the clumping and breaking down of proteins in the lens.
After first testing their theory on human lens cells, the scientists tried out the treatment of rabbits suffering from cataracts. 85% of the rabbits responded positively to the treatment. Within six days of administering lanosterol, the severity of their cataracts had reduced. Similar results were also observed in dogs that were administered the treatment, leading scientists to conclude that the size of cataracts had shrunk significantly because of lanosterol.
The next obvious step would be trialed on patients suffering from cataracts. Scientists, however, caution that there is a lot more research that needs to be carried out before lanosterol eye drops can be deemed safe or fit enough for treating cataracts in humans. Nevertheless, the hope that lanosterol has provided indicates that eye drops could certainly become the treatment for cataracts in the future.

  1. This appears to be highly misleading and without scientific basis. All that comes up in a Google search is over the counter natural remedies that could be snake oil, for one knows.

It calls into question your whole website if you are happy to publish unsubstantiated articles. Not a big picture but a false picture.

  2. The advantages to eye wellbeing identify with its carotenoid content. Carrot juice gives perhaps the most extravagant wellspring of carotenoids that shield the eyes from harming free radicals, and as indicated by research studies analyzing the advantages of carrot squeeze, these discoveries have uncovered its enemy of disease battling benefits: A half decline in hazard for malignancies identified with the bladder, prostate, and larynx to give some examples.
