Elon Musk Explains Why Traditional Schooling is Useless Today

There have many advocates against traditional schooling over the years, but very few takers or listeners for opinions that have been considered to be too radical. However, recently when Elon Musk, reiterated something similar, people have begun to understand the logic behind his reasoning.

Musk said in the interview. “I think a lot of things that people learn probably there’s no point in learning them because that they never use them in the future because kids just in school kinda puzzled as to why they’re there.”

The reason why his words have found agreement with the masses is probably because of what he represents. Musk is not only the co-founder of Paypal and founder of SpaceX, but he is also the CEO and product architect at Tesla Motors, CEO and CTO of SpaceX and chairman of SolarCity.

In the past, too Musk has spoken about how his school lessons were neither interesting nor had any value. Coupled with the fact that he was at the receiving end of bullies, his experience at public schools was not a pleasant one.

Musk also states that a college or high school degree doesn’t guarantee knowledge and as such it doesn’t bother him if his employees do not have college degrees. He has often been very open about these views on Twitter too. His response to a Tweet about degrees found many admirers.

The Tweet that he responded to said, “You can’t succeed in life without a degree. That’s why you need schooling if you want to go to Harvard.” Musk response was “That’s not true. Don’t confuse schooling with education. I didn’t go to Harvard but the people that work for me did.”

To see that his train out of thought had some relevance for his own children, Musk started a school for them to carve out their own paths. He feels that hands-on experience is far more enriching for a child than for them to memorize and then spit out answers.

“It’s important to teach problem-solving or teach to the problem and not the tools. Let’s say you’re trying to teach people about how engines work. A more traditional approach would be saying, ‘we’re going to teach all about screwdrivers and wrenches.’ This is a very difficult way to do it,” he said.

Rather than the theory, he feels that the best way to learn is by actually taking an engine apart and discovering how it works.

When someone who has taken such leaps ahead in entrepreneurship and invention worries about his children suffering the effects of traditional schooling, the larger public needs to take heed and listen.

  1. However, he admitted that he has people from Harvard working for him. Why, if he can get all he needs from non-degreed individuals? I believe what he is trying to say is that if you have the initiative you can obtain your own education. I wholly agree with that. College provides the environment in which to learn, unfortunately too many who go, do not take advantage of that. And those who have the ambition for self-education, about the square root of the population. (Thats about 18,000 of the U.S. population.)
